What is Graffiti?
Graffiti is classed as any unauthorized painting, marking, etching or other method used to deface a property, vehicle or structure.
Graffiti falls into 4 main categories.
1. The first is “individualised” graffiti, normally proclamations of love, witty comments, social statement or political message or commentary. Normally found in public toilets or similar places.
2. The second is “gang” graffiti used to mark a territory or a show of bravado. The messages can seem inoffensive to most people but some can contain cryptic codes that could enrage other gangs causing possible repercussions beyond the actual graffiti.
3. The third being graffiti “ART”, also known as subway art or hip hop style. Originating in the 1970’s from New York, it has spread rapidly around the world. Although these murals can have a lot of artistic merit they can cause vandalism to surrounding areas.
4. The fourth and most prevalent form of graffiti at the moment is “TAGGING”. It is performed very quickly and holds no artistic merit and is solely a way of defacing property. This form is really the “Kilroy woz ere” of the moment. If its' presence is ignored it can encourage more “tags” quickly making an area appear rundown very quickly.
